Jazz FM Album of the Week: Dreaming by Sabrina Malheiros

The Jazz FM Album of the Week is ‘Dreaming‘ by Sabrina Malheiros and we have five copies to be given away.

Leading the nu-bossa generation with the likes of Bebel Gilberto, Malheiros’s distinctive sound has built a worldwide fanbase around the world. Her debut album ‘Equilibria’ arrived in a wave of instant acclaim and led to her playing debut shows in the UK and Japan. The 2006 remix album ‘Vibrasons’ – including Nicola Conte, Quantic and Kenny Dope reworks – was followed by the successful sophomore ‘New Morning’.

This third studio album from Malheiros combines the minimal electronic soul sound of her debut with sweeping, organic Brazilian pop and traditional sounds of Brazil. Featuring some leading Brazilian musicians including her father Alex Malheiros (Azymuth); Jesse Sadoc (Marcos Valle); Alfredo Cardim (Joyce); Robertinho Silva (Milton Nascimento) and written and co-produced with Sabrina by partner Daniel ‘Venom’ Maunick (Viper Squad/son of Bluey from Incognito), the record falls between nu-Rio, classic Brazil and the complex melodic electronic music emerging from the post-dubstep, post-drum and bass London soundscape.

On ‘Fragil’, Sabrina employs renowned samba percussionist Robertinho Silva to deliver her delicate take on Brazil’s African connections; ‘Bobeira’ is breezy chill-out while the ‘Digital Dreaming Reprise’ opener adds Maunick’s deep beats and addictive synths. Sabrina harks back to ‘70s Brazil with the dreamy acid-folk ‘Lirio de Venus (Interlude)’, before bringing things right into the modern electronic-era with a big dub bass colliding with her trademark soft acoustic guitar harmonies on ‘Paranoia’.
