Sabrina Malheiros’ Dreaming mixes Brazilian rhythms and gentle lyrics
Album review: Sabrina Malheiros’ Dreaming is an interesting cross-fertilisation of Brazilian bossa and breezier London club sounds.
The interesting cross-fertilisation of Brazilian bossa and breezier London club sounds explored by singer Sabrina Malheiros and producer Daniel Maunick are displayed to beguiling effect on Dreaming.
There’s not a lot here that’s markedly different to the couple’s previous two albums.
Classic Brazilian rhythms and Malheiros’s coolly gentle, honey-brushed vocals combine well with Maunick’s upbeat, jazz-funk-leaning electronic enhancements – though the foray into English vocals on Can’t Hide Love sounds less convincing.
But instrumental Fragil’s incantatory, Africa-tinged samba percussion, and the sunny soulful-house tweaks to vintage bossa on Primeira are highlights in a soothing nu bossa set.
